Elmswell CC Quiz success
Congratulations to a team made up of club members and friends of the club who took part in a charity quiz night organised by Elmswell Baptist Church. Although they came under strong competition from the other teams taking part, the Elmswell CC team held their nerve and came out victorious. Let's hope this is a sign of things to come for the 2011 season.

Winning run ends at one
Elmswell's winning streak in the second half of the season lasted just one match after defeat away to Stowmarket on Sunday.
Batting first, Elmswell made a good start with Dan Cowley scoring a measured 56 and putting on 69 with Nigel Greathead(28) for the first wicket. Unfortunately the rest of the innings was a little less productive with a lot of players making starts but nothing else. It took a last wicket stand of 24 by Wally Cowley(5) and Nigel Burch(*15) to get the visitors to 159ao in the last over.
In reply Stowmarket made steady progress to their target and were only really put into trouble by some excellent spin bowling by James Garrard who took 4-26 on debut. However, this was not enough to stop Stowmarket who made it home with almost five overs to spare.
A good effort by Elmswell who couldn't quite match the heroics of our boys in Cardiff. Having now dropped into the relegation zone of Div 3 it has become even more important to win home games, starting with the match against Lavenham next Sunday.

We're back on track
The second half of the season began with an emphatic win for Elmswell at home to Thurston.
Elmswell lost the toss and were put into bat by the visitors and didn't make the best of starts with Dan Cowley falling for just one run in the first over. This brought Kevin Barnes to the crease who together with Nigel Greathead steadied the ship and put on an impressive 108 runs for the second wicket. Kevin, batting with a runner for most of his innings, scored 39 and Nigel was caught out agonisingly short of his half century on 49. The other partnership of note was for the 7th wicket between Doug Reed and Ian Plowman who batted well at the end of the innings putting on 57 runs, taking the innings score to 204-6
Thurston's reply began at pace with 21 runs coming off the first three overs. However Elmswell bowled well and took vital wickets to prevent the run chase from ever being on. Some tight bowling from Doug Reed and Nigel Greathead meant that Thurston were bowled out for just 127 from just 30 overs.
An excellent all round performance from Elmswell provided a much needed win and with the table being very tight, should push them up the table a couple of places.

Chins up boys!
Elmswell reached the halfway point of their season with a comprehensive defeat against high flying Nowton. The home side were put into bat by Elmswell but made a slow start in setting them a total. Elmswell's bowlers toiled hard but only managed to take four wickets with Nowton scoring 178. Pick of the bowlers was Doug reed with figures of 3-36.
Elmswell's reply started well with Dan Cowley scoring a rapid 24 but after his dismissal the innings fell apart in dramatic fashion with the remaining batsmen only managing a score of 26 combined. When the dust had settled Elmswell were all out for 53 from just 24 overs.
Hopefully we can put an end to this poor run of form when the second half of the season gets going at home against Thurston.

Mon 15/06/09
Well I've never seen that before!
It's four defeats on the bounce now for Elmswell as they fell to another loss away at Cavendish. The away side batted first and opener Andy Walshe scored well with 45 but others in the top half of the order failed to get going. It fell to Nigel Greathead, batting at an unusual number seven, and Doug Reed to rescue the innings with a partnership of 63. The away side finished on 162ao with two overs to spare.
Cavendish began their innings positively and it took an extremely unusual dismissal to take the first wicket. Cavendish's opening batsman hit a Nigel Greathead delivery straight to the square leg umpire on the full. The ball flew up in the air and a quick thinking Brad Harrington took a swift catch. After several minutes of conversation, the sides agreed that the batsman was out (For those interested, the correct decision was made as per Law 32.3e). However it was a case of missed chances proving fatal as Elmswell found wickets hard to come by through the main part of Cavendish's innings. A couple of smart run outs as the home side neared their target made for a slightly nervy finish but Cavendish were home a dry with over five overs remaining.

We're on a role...backwards!
Elmswell made it three defeats in row with a loss at home to a young Bury St Edmunds side on Sunday.
Captain Nigel Greathead lost the toss but was put into bat in the scorching conditions at the Blackbourne. Most of Elmswell's batsmen made good starts with Nigel and Ash Greathead making it into the 20s. But it took a measured innings of 42 not out by Kevin Barnes to hold the innings together. The home side finished on 151-8 from their 40 overs.
After tea, Elmswells bowlers and fielders were made to toil in the still warm conditions. It took until the 15 over before a wicket was taken, by which time Bury had made good progress with their run chase.
Although wickets fell faster after the drinks break Elmswell were left with too much to do and Bury completed their task with 6 overs to spare.
Elmswell will look to stop the rot away at BSSSC next Sunday, hopefully bringing home more than just bonus points.

How did we lose that one?
Elmswell lost their second game of the season in a match dominated by the bat. Captain Nigel Greathead won his fourth toss out of five and decided to bat, leaving Thurston to field in the scorching Suffolk sunshine. Elmswell posted an excellent 256-1 with Dan Cowley hitting a new high score of *116 including eleven 4s and two 6s. He was well supported by Nigel Greathead with a patient 36 and Andy Walshe with a quick-fire *86.
In reply Thurston made a very quick start and looked to be making the large total with ease. However, Elmswell pegged them back with four wickets in seven overs, including an outstanding juggling catch by Wally Cowley at long on. Unfortunately, Thurston's batting brought them home with two overs to spare to win this very high scoring match.

Winning streak comes to an end
Elmswell finally lost their first game of the season today at Lakenheath. Elmswell lost the toss and were put into bat with only nine players able to make up the team this week. Heavy rain before the match made the pitch difficult to score on and Elmswell found it very hard going. A patient 24 from Dan Cowley and a quick fire 22 from Lee Gooderham were the only double figure scores as the away side posted a score of 74-8 from just 27 overs.
Lakenheath made fairly short work of the required runs, even though Elmswell bowled well. Dan Cowley and Nigel Greathead took two wickets each and special mention goes to Brad Harrington who ended with figures of one wicket for just two runs.

We're on a role!
Elmswell's excellent start to the new season continued with a comfortable win against Long Melford at the Blackbourne. Elmswell lost their first toss of the season and were sent out to bat first on what looked to be a good batting track. The opening pair took full advantage, especially Dan Cowley who hit 88 - his best score for the so far. He was well supported by Nigel Greathead with 31 and new man Kevin Barnes also added 27. Elmswell finished on 196-5.
Chasing that large total, Long Melford struggled. By the 20 over mark 6 wickets had fallen with only 32 runs scored. They finally finished on 98-9 from their 40 overs. Pick of the bowlers was Nigel Greathead with figures of 3-5.

Elmswell make it two out of two...just
Elmswell secured their second win of the season with an exciting win at Lavenham. Elmswell again won the toss and decided to bat first. Nigel Greathead and Kevin Harrington made scores of 34 and 32 respectively but nobody else really got going and the away side were bowled out for just 116.
Lavenham's innings started badly with Neil Hillier taking two early wickets, both caught by Ian Plowman. Although Lavenham scored well they continued to lose wickets regularly and it fell to Nigel Greathead to take the final wicket in the 37th over with Lavenham just 4 runs short.
